The 2 Rs

Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults are still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. Shocking statistics from UNESCO. By now most of the children in the UK have started back at school and it is hoped that those who will be going into year 1 and higher would have the skills to read and write. These basic skills are needed to advance in life, help with confidence and self esteem. To read the statistics from UNESCO, who declared the 8th September as International Literacy Day, it is very alarming. I love to read and write and can not imagine my life without the two. I hope that this day will be greatly celebrated and acknowledged as an entitlement in life. Any old books that the little man has read so many times are usually passed onto the after school club.

Reading is the inhale, writing is the exhale.
